Some local Star Trek fans, otherwise known as "Trekkies" are working hard to make sure hungry families in the Valley can live long and prosper this holiday season.

Members of Star Fleet USS Renegade are working to help feed others after they received an emergency beacon of families to put food on their tables.

Commander John Hoppa tells 21 News the crew chose Second Harvest Food Bank, which in 2021 provided over 8.8 million meals to folks throughout 163 partner agencies in the tri-county area.

"We fee in this area there is a great need for food in the Valley. Especially with the way things are going now with the economy and all of that. Now is a great time to help out as much as we can with the food bank," Commander Hoppa said.

Crew members attend about eight toy and collectible conventions in the region per year selling items such as autographed pictures signed and donated by sci-fi stars, cups note pads and tribles.

Second Harvest Food Bank is able to multiply each dollar to provide $10 in food to neighbors in need.

If you'd like to help their cause, you can beam yourself up to your local Sparkle Market and donate any non-perishable food items in the collection boxes.

You can also donate at the register paying for groceries at your local Giant Eagle or when fueling up at your local GetGo gas station.
