WASHINGTON - Another Valley resident has been charged in connection with the January 6, 2021 riot as protestors tried to prevent Congress from certifying Joseph Biden as President.

Michael Scott Lockwood, 32, surrendered to federal authorities on Thursday after the FBI identified him as the January 6th protestor who allegedly grabbed a baton from a Metropolitan Police officer who was trying to keep demonstrators out of the Capitol.

According to Cleveland.com, Lockwood is from Southington in Trumbull County.

The investigation that led to charges being filed against Lockwood began in July following the riot when an FBI Intelligence Analyst reviewed video of the incursion recorded by a private citizen.

According to an FBI document, the video showed members of the Metropolitan Police Department attempting to clear out a large crowd of people from the upper level of the amphitheater located on the west side of the U.S. Capitol Building.

The document says that during an altercation between officers and people in the crowd, one person began swinging a flagpole in the air.

The FBI says one officer used a law enforcement baton to keep the person from hitting other officers with the flagpole.

Another person, later identified as Lockwood, allegedly grabbed the officer holding the baton, and after a struggle between the two, the FBI says Lockwood managed to get control of the baton.

In addition, officer’s body worn cameras recorded Lockwood grabbing the baton when he jumped down on a platform.

The feds say Lockwood then walked away and into the crowd with the baton in his hand.

The baton can be seen circled in red in photos submitted by the FBI.

The FBI analyst identified the suspect as Lockwood by running his picture through FBI and public databases.

Using images from two previous arrests of Lockwood, the analyst was able to find a Facebook account linked with Lockwood.

In addition to finding a Facebook photo of Lockwood wearing a hat identical to that worn by the suspect in the riot video, agents say they traced him to an address in the Youngstown area.

In January of this year, using information gathered from social media,  the FBI contacted Lockwood’s grandmother who identified Lockwood as the suspect who grabbed the officers baton.

Lockwood faces five charges including obstruction of law enforcement, assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers, entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds, and two counts of disorderly conduct.

Lockwood made his initial court appearance via video on Thursday.

He is free on $20,000 bond awaiting further court action in U.S. District Court in Washington where his case will be prosecuted.

Nearly 900 people have been charged in connection with the effort to stop congress from certifying Joseph Biden as the winner in the race for President in 2020. Seven of those people are from the Valley.
