1997: The city of Warren is close to making a $500,000 deal that will allow it to raze the Mahoningside Power Plant.
A Meadville, Pa., woman and her three young children died when their car left Route 322 and landed in French Creek. The accident happened on a curve where another woman died after driving into a creek a year earlier. Dead are Tina Reid and children Veronica, 9; Amanda, 6; and Timothy, 3.
Encouraged by a federal investigation into organized crime in the Mahoning Valley, area clergy are calling for an end to decades of mob influence and political corruption.
1982: Msgr. Anthony R. Wisniewski welcomes Youngstown's newest refugees from Poland to Holy Cross Polish National Church. Gabriella Sadnowski and her adult sons, Jack and Michael, will be staying temporarily at the rectory.
Dr. Jack Schreiber of Canfield, a general practitioner, is honored as the Mahoning County Medical Society's Doctor of the Year at the society's fifth annual event.
Ten young men from the tri-county area are inducted into the Air Force in a special ceremony in Warren rather than Cleveland. The recruits were Kenneth R. Boston, William C. Phillips, Keith A. Stoffer, Michael J. Jennings, Gerald R. Mather, David K. Yukon, Anthony G. Slocum, Steven B. Molner, Haril R. Hurst, and Dennis E. Wolfe.
1972: Phillip Richley, director of the Ohio Department of Transportation, says state Route 11 in Northern Trumbull County will not be opened until 13-grade separations are built. Residents complained that the highway, built with 13 intersections and country roads, would be unsafe.
Rayen basketball Coach Ted Theodosoff says Dave Cosart, who has been averaging 23.6 points a game, is one of the best players he has ever coached.
Leroy Fort, a 21-year-old construction worker, is killed by a shotgun blast fired into his car from another vehicle in the 300 block of Wallace Avenue.
1947: Mayor Elect Charles Henderson names Edward J. Allen, an Erie, Pa., police sergeant, to be Youngstown's chief of police and tells him to clean up the city. Among those recommending Allen for the job was J. Edgar Hoover of the FBI.
A contract is approved, giving Mahoning County Freight Association truckers a 20 percent increase, bringing their hourly wage to $1.25.
The Rev. Stanislaus Crovella, superior of St. Paul Monastery in Canfield, and the Rev. Patrick Pennisi, a member of the Pious Society of St. Paul, are in St. Elizabeth Hospital with injuries suffered when their car skidded into one driven by Russell Park, 19, of Canfield.
