Vindicator file photo / January 3, 1957 | John W. Galbreath, Columbus realtor and owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, gave 43 acres and ten lots to the village of McDonald 65 years ago. James W. Phillips, Galbreath’s son-in-law, gave the deed to McDonald Mayor Stanley K. Polanski as Councilman Daniel C. Hughes looked on. The land, valued at $40,000, was to be used in part for park development.

1998: Organizers of a proposed return of the Kenley musical theater to the Packard Music Hall in Warren have raised $200,000 toward a $600,000 goal.
Austintown contractor Joseph Koch offers a helicopter and pilot to conduct a free aerial deer census of Mill Creek Park. Park director William Schollaert says the park knows it has a problem but doesn't want to begin culling the herd until numbers have been confirmed.
Jeannette Thomas, 39, who was blind, made four calls to 911 reporting an intruder in her Philadelphia Avenue apartment before Youngstown police responding to the fourth call found her stabbed to death. Her boyfriend, William Bryant, 43, was arrested after he called the police to ask about her condition.
1983: Seven-Eleven stores in Northeast Ohio pull Visine from their shelves after a W. LaClede Avenue man goes to St. Elizabeth Hospital with blurred vision after using Visine bought at a South Avenue store. Youngstown police have the bottle.
To mark its centennial, the Youngstown Hospital Association adds several items to a 100-year-old time capsule.
The first sisters to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School are the daughters of Robert J. and Helen Wolanin of New Castle. Dr. Kathleen Montgomery, a 1979 graduate, has a practice in New Castle, and Dr. Jane Karski, a 1981 graduate, has an office in Poland and teaches one day a week at YSU.
1973: The Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce Special Taxation Committee reviews the city budget and recommends strict supervision of employee hours and hiring an outside contractor for custodial and maintenance at City Hall.
Pennsylvania Gov. William Shapp will ask the legislature to cut the state's 2.3 percent income tax.
Vince Farrar, 62, a 1931 Rayen School graduate who was among the area's best athletes ever, dies. After collegiate ball at North Carolina State, he played for five years in the professional ranks, three for the New York Giants and two for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
1948: The price of butter in Youngstown soars to $1.05 a pound.
An ice storm cripples much of the eastern and northern parts of the country, with damage estimated at $50 million in 16 states.
Youngstown Police Capt. William Golden leads a raid on Joe Budak's Club 22 at 22 Phelps St., routing 25 patrons at 4 a.m. Budak tells Golden, "You're jumping the gun. You're not supposed to start your campaign till January 5th."
