WARREN, Ohio - A Warren couple face child endangering and other charges after police say a six-year-old girl was found at their home where marijuana and illegal mushrooms were being grown.

Officers were called to investigate a report that an intruder was inside a garage on the 2400 block of Hamilton Street NW Thursday night.

Police say they found the home’s residents, 36-year-old Christopher Cates and 37-year-old Stephanie Yash, in their garage.

According to the police report, officers ordered Cates to drop a garden hoe he was holding, and Yash was ordered to drop a kitchen knife.  Police say no one else was in the garage.

As more officers arrived, police say they arrested Cates after he refused to drop the hoe and come out of the garage.

Upset that her boyfriend had been arrested, Yash picked up the knife, according to police who say she was also holding a crack pipe.

As Yash was placed into handcuffs, police say they went into the home after hearing a child crying.

Once inside, officers say they found a nude six-year-old girl, and a marijuana growing operationg.

The report says police found four marijuana plants, three trays of illegal mushrooms growing, a bag of syringes, 80 petri dishes containing mushroom spores, and 108 jars of suspected marijuana seeds.

The child was turned over to a relative while police booked the two adults into the Trumbull County Jail.

Both were charged with endangering children. Cates is also charged with obstructing official business and resisting arrest. Yash is also charged with drug paraphernalia.

Both pleaded not guilty at their video arraignments on Friday.  As a condition of their bond, both suspects were ordered to have no contact with the child.

The next hearings in the case are scheduled for next week.
