EAST LACKAWANNOCK TOWNSHIP. Pa. - A truckload of groceries went up in flames along Interstate 80 in Mercer County early Monday.

Dispatchers sent firefighters from Mercer East End and Shenango Township to the eastbound lanes of the interstate in East Lackawannock Township shortly before 5 a.m. where a refrigerated trailer was burning.

When fire crews arrived, they found that the driver had managed to uncouple the truck from the trailer.  However, the fire had spread through the trailer, burning the cargo and the truck’s tires.

It took firefighters about two hours to make sure the flames were extinguished.

One lane of I-80 was closed until the fire was put out.

No one was injured.

The Shenango Township Fire Chief says this was his department’s sixteenth call since the New Year began.
