Vending machines filled with books installed at Howland Local Schools

HOWLAND, Ohio - Vending machines were installed inside Howland Glen Primary and H.C. Mines Elementary School, but they aren't filled with candy.
Books fill the shelves of these vending machines, and teachers are using them to reward and incentivize their students.
Reward systems have been developed by school staff based on what works best for their students.
"One classroom might use a reading log, while another classroom is working towards good behavior or character," said Travis Roth, Howland Glen's Principal.
Howland Local School's Parent Teacher Organization purchased the vending machines using funds collected during the fall fundraiser and Parents Night Out event in April.
"This is a really exciting day for the Howland PTO," said Angela Stefurak, PTO Executive Board President. "This was a large purchase, costing over $11,000, and is a great visual example of how important our fundraisers are."
The machines were purchased to encourage reading through both academic performance and personal achievements.
Stefurak says the books are absolutely free and will be distributed on a reward-based system.
