YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A former Youngstown police officer has pled guilty to a charge of theft in court on Tuesday.

According to court records, 29-year-old Deon Gilbert pled guilty to one reduced charge of theft and was ordered to pay a fine of $150.

The charge stems from an incidents from between September and October of 2022 after failing to scan several items at the self checkout at a local Walmart store.

Gilbert was placed on paid leave once these incidents came to light.

According to a loss prevention officer at the store, Gilbert did this several times between late September and early October of 2022. It is estimated that a total of $134.52 worth of merchandise was stolen by Gilbert.

21 News has confirmed with Youngstown Law Director, Jeff Limbian that Gilbert has resigned from the police department since being placed on leave, but did not know when he had resigned.
