Witnesses testified Tuesday about what they saw the night of June 15, 2022, on the south side of Youngstown, where 29-year-old Keimone Black was shot and killed at the Shell Gas station on South Avenue.
The suspect is 69-year-old Samuel Byrd, charged in connection to the shooting with aggravated murder and firearm specifications. Police reported Black was shot several times and found his body next to a car with several bullet holes.
One witness said he was beside Black sleeping in their car when the shooting unfolded.
"There was a loud bang waking me up," James Davis said, "Then I remember actually hearing the bullets striking the vehicle, that's when the window got hit."
A gas station cashier testified she was working the late night shift when she heard the gunfire.
"I was on the phone with my husband telling him goodnight," she said, "I was facing my register and I heard gunshots, I looked at my co-worker and I said 'Somebody is shooting! Get down!'"
Youngstown Police Department Captain Jaosn Simon said the Shell gas station on South Avenue is not considered a "trouble spot," but said discussions are ongoing to ensure it doesn't turn into one.
"We are keeping an eye on it simply because other incidents have happened there," Simon said, "However, in our cooperation with the business owners, I don't think it's going to be allowed to become a long-term problem."
Simon added YPD already patrols the area often since it can bring high traffic, being near the highway.
"As establishments and bars begin to close, cars tend to congregate at gas stations and other 24-hour establishments and we tend to have more police patrols at those kinds of establishments for added security," he said.
