EAST PALESTINE, Ohio - The water quality in East Palestine is still concerning for many citizens. Following Senator JD Vance's viral video showing an oil-like sheen in a creek, 21 News spoke with water quality expert Dr. Kuldeep Singh.

He says the results of that water experiment stemmed from the train crash and there are two potential reasons for contamination.

"It may indicate two things. Either the groundwater is contaminated in that particular location, that stirring of the stream bed opened that avenue for some chemicals to show up in the stream because some of these chemicals are lighter than water," Singh said.

Singh says another reason for the visible chemical sheen could have been from natural elements in the water fusing to the chemicals from the explosion forming byproducts.

During Friday's press conference, Governor Mike DeWine reacted to the viral video that has nearly 5 million views on Twitter.

The governor says one creek remains severely contaminated and may take some time to rectify.

"It will be remediated but it's certainly a place to avoid," DeWine said.

Dr. Singh says those efforts need to happen quickly, however, because the longer some chemicals sit, the further into the soil they can sink. If that happens, it could take years to clean up entirely.
