Dams in East Palestine streams not breached after heavy rain

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio - Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's Office has released new information following Friday evening's rain in the East Palestine area.
Water Overflow
According to the release, the dam at Sulphur Run and Leslie Run is working as expected and was not breached following the heavy rain. While it may have appeared that the dam was breached, the overflow of water was part of the mitigation plan for increased water from the rain.
DeWine's Office says the dams were modified for water overflow and the Ohio EPA said a contractor made a depression in the dam to relieve the overflow and lower the water level. Vacuum trucks were then used to pull up the released water.
The Ohio EPA does not believe any visibly contaminated waste was released into the streams and the overflowed water was tested before the storm and had very low or non-detectable dissolved contaminant levels. The water that was released was tested and results are expected in the next few days.
Soil Removal
Track panels were also removed from the south line Friday and excavation of the track began Saturday. Crews removed the stone to get to the underlying clay. The excavation of the clay has been delayed due to rain.
