1998: A bill regulating private prisons has cleared the Ohio Senate and is headed for the House.
 
James ”Doc" Pugh, president of the Trumbull County NAACP, calls for laws that assure local residents, especially minorities,  are hired when a private company gets a city contract or tax abatement.  
 
Jeffrey Hundt, chairman of the state financial oversight commission overseeing Youngstown public schools, says commission members see no reason to have future joint meetings with members of an elected board of education. 
 
1983: Boardman Superintendent Ronald Overfield proposes a budget of $12.8 million, the lowest in four years after state funding is cut by $1.2 million. 
 
The Church of God of New Springfield is sending seven volunteers to Haiti, where they will spend several weeks working at a clinic. 
 
Weigand W. Jenson, 81, internationally known locksmith and inventor of the Micro-Dial Key Crafter, dies in North Side Hospital. He was also known for speaking to 90,000 students over the years to warn them of the dangers of smoking. He spoke with an electro-larynx after having his removed in 1954 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. 
 
1973: Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. is considering an exhibit at the Nefka Gas Expo in Moscow.
