Man involved in Liberty Township police shootout sentenced in court

WARREN, Ohio - The man involved in a shootout with police in Liberty Township in June of 2022 was sentenced in court on Tuesday.
Fifty-five-year-old Kevin Mallard was sentenced to 68 to 73 years in prison on four counts of attempted murder with firearm specifications, one count of inducing panic with firearm specifications, one count of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle with firearm specifications and one count of carrying a concealed weapon.
These charges stem from an incident captured on video showing him firing at police officers following a road rage incident.
Witnesses say the incident began when Mallard walked up to a vehicle on Belmont Avenue and shot the driver in the face and fled the scene.
Once police caught up to Mallard and conducted a traffic stop, Mallard exited his vehicle and began shooting at police resulting in officers returning fire and striking Mallard.
During his arraignment, Mallard asked a judge if he was eligible for the death penalty, but the judge ruled that he was not.
