21 WFMJ archives / March 22, 1983 | The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency identified brine dumping at an old slag dump in Lowellville as the likely cause of elevated sodium levels in the Beaver River, which provided drinking water for Beaver Falls 40 years ago. The EPA said the orange-tinted liquid from oil and gas drilling sites made its way into the Mahoning and then Beaver rivers.

1998: National Football League Commissioner Paul Tagliabue announces that the Cleveland Browns have officially rejoined the NFL as an expansion franchise. 

U.S. Rep. Phil English, R-21st, takes a chainsaw to a copy of the federal budget outside the Sharon, Pa., Post Office to kick off his campaign to replace it with a new, simpler code. 

Farrell City Council kills plans to expand the Shenango Valley Enterprise Zone to include portions of Shenango Township and West Middlesex.  

1983: Kornel J. Feher is fired as president of the Commuter Aircraft Corp. by the board of directors while Feher was in the Middle East with U.S. Rep. Lyle Williams trying to find buyers for a plane that was planned for production at the Youngstown airport. 

Warren Mayor Daniel Sferra has received a letter from Emory Folmar, mayor of Birmingham, Ala., denying that five Warren citizens charged in connection with the beating of two Montgomery policemen have been mistreated and giving assurance that the five will be treated fairly.

Book lovers and bargain seekers flood the aisles at the semi-annual book sale at the Goodwill Industries complex on Belmont Avenue.  

1973: The Ohio House passes a bill to authorize "vanity" license plates for an additional $35.

Trumbull County commissioners approve a record $16.5 million budget.

Youngstown State University confers degrees on 887 graduates during winter commencement at Beeghly Center. 

1948: About 200 Youngstown property owners jam City Council chambers to protest zoning changes that would allow light industrial buildings in residential neighborhoods.

Youngstown, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland will switch to Daylight Saving Time on April 25, but farmers oppose "fast time" by a 4 to 3 margin.

Charlie Joachim, East High graduate who won All-Ohio honors at Mount Union, is the spark plug of the Youngstown Cubs of the All-American League.
