Humane agents rescued two injured dogs from a home on Youngstown's west side Thursday afternoon.

The two pit bulls, now named Hercules and Beast, had severely infected wounds caused by chemical burns and a possibility of sepsis.

Operations manager Jane MacMurchy says the owners took it upon themselves to provide medical care to their dogs, which only made matters worse.

Animal Charity took the pups to MedVet Mahoning for treatment and feared they could have to be transferred to Akron because of the severity of the wounds.

Both dogs were sedated as veterinarians worked to find the extent of their injuries and infection.

Humane Agents say the dogs did not have to be taken to Akron and have been discharged from the hospital.

Hercules and Beast are back in the care of Animal Charity but their wounds are painful and will take several weeks, if not months to heal.

MacMurchy says they will not be pursuing animal cruelty charges, because the owners surrendered the dogs.
