COLUMBUS, Ohio - An Ohio prison inmate will have to wait longer for another chance at parole from his 15-year-to-life sentence for murder at a Youngstown restaurant.

Mahoning County Prosecutor Gina DeGenova filed an objection when she learned that 62-year-old Paul Dickerson was up for parole this month.

According to updated records from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, Dickerson will remain locked up with another parole hearing scheduled for February 2026.

After pleading guilty to murder and possessing a dangerous ordinance, Dickerson was sentenced in 1990.

Investigators say that around 4:00 a.m. on February 4, 1990, Gerald Bankhead (aka Butch) and Dickerson argued with Jerome Tellington inside Willie Mae’s Soul Kitchen on Youngstown’s south side.

After the argument, Bankhead and Dickerson left Willie Mae’s and drove to Bankhead’s girlfriend’s house where Bankhead got a sawed-off shotgun, and the two drove back to Willie Mae’s Soul Kitchen around 4:30 a.m.

At some point, Bankhead handed Dickerson the shotgun, say prosecutors. Bankhead and Dickerson went back inside Willie Mae’s and during a confrontation with Tellington, Dickerson pulled out the gun and shot Tellington.

The Prosecutor’s Office objected to Dickerson’s release on the grounds that he continues to be a danger to society.

During Dickerson’s time in prison, the prosecutor says he has been cited for 35 infractions, including 4 citations for misbehavior in the last year alone.
