New Wilmington driver charged after SUV hits Mercer woman walking along road

A New Wilmington man is being cited for DUI and drug charges after police say the SUV he was driving struck a Mercer woman as she was walking along a road.
Police say 65-year-old Clarence Edinger Jr was driving the Buick Encore along Latonka Drive in Coolspring Township Thursday afternoon when it veered across the center line and struck a 59-year-old Mercer woman as she walked along the opposite side of the road.
The woman was taken to AHN Hospital for treatment of injuries with unknown severity.
Edinger told police he had been distracted by a stone inside his shoe when the accident occurred.
Police say in addition to detecting signs that the driver was impaired, he had an object hanging from the SUVs rear view mirror that obstructed his view.
Edinger is charged with DUI, drug possession, and drug paraphernalia.
