NEWTON TWP, Ohio - A Newton township mother has been sentenced to one year in jail on child endangerment charges.

Twenty-seven-year-old Amber McElvary was handed a concurrent sentence of 12 months in jail on two counts of Endangering Children.

She originally was charged with four counts, but court employees tell 21 News counts one and three and counts two and four were merged.

The charges stem from an incident involving McElvary throwing her five-year-old son across a room, slamming him on the ground and continuously striking him with a belt.

Additionally, McElvary's ex-husband, Kyle McElvary was indicted in December of 2022 for child endangerment and domestic violence, with him being accused of repeatedly striking a child's head with an object.

The couple filed for divorce in January.
