1998: Shenango Valley Industrial Development Corp. closes the deal for the purchase of 36 acres of land along Broadway Street in Farrell from Caparo Steel for the development of an industrial park. 

The Youngstown Parks and Recreation Department has managed to hire only one lifeguard so far as it tries to open at least two swimming pools in the next two weeks. It needs five to seven guards at each pool.  

Girard officials want to add the city's name to Liberty Memorial Park, which was given its name in 1925 as a tribute to soldiers who fought in World War I and at a time when the rivalry between Girard and Liberty Township was less pronounced.

1983: Fred Gronvall, president of Strouss Department Stores, announces that the company will close its downtown Warren store, which has been open since 1940.

Marilyn Wellendorf, 1972 Miss Junior Achievement, crowns her successor, Karen Lisko, as 1973 Miss JA. Both are students at Woodrow Wilson High.

Edward J. DeBartolo, the nation's leading plaza builder, confirms he has purchased the Balmoral Race Track and more than 1,000 adjoining acres south of Chicago. 

1948: Fourth Ward Councilman Edgar Morley says bingo games in Youngstown should be licensed to conform to state law and a strict watch kept on the distribution of profits. 

Seventh Ward Councilman Stephen Olenick complains that a Youngstown police officer ordered a large number of Democratic councilmen to "move on" when they were congregated outside the Hotel Pick Ohio following a meeting. 

The United Steelworkers of America, representing 928,000 members, goes on record in favor of the construction of a Lake Erie to Ohio River canal.
