1998: Michael Morley gets 77 percent of the vote, overpowering his only opponent, Mark Belinky, for the chairmanship of the Mahoning County Democratic Party. 

Girard Police Chief John Ross, 73, is appealing the dismissal of his age discrimination suit against the city.

The Huffy bicycle plant in Celina, Ohio, will be closed after 40 years, eliminating about 1,000 jobs. The company says bicycles produced in Asia cost up to 20 percent less compared to U.S. models. 

1983: A record number of women are on the ballot in Trumbull County for the June 7 primary. One of them is Laura McLaughlin, a Democratic candidate for McDonald Village Council who has been campaigning door-to-door with her three toddlers while expecting her fourth child in a month. 

Richard Kempe, 28, an assistant track coach at Austintown Fitch High, is the first to cross the finish line in the Strouss 5-mile fun run with a time of 25 minutes, 5 seconds. The first female was Wilma DePiore, 14, with a time of 31:25.

R. Thornton Beeghly, industrialist and long-time community leader, is selected to receive the Distinguished Citizen Award of the Youngstown State University Alumni Association. 

1973: About 8,000 people turn out under sunny skies to watch 109 marching units in downtown Youngstown's Memorial Day parade. 

Joe Nuzzo and Peggy DiBatista won the mixed doubles tournament staged by the Youngstown Men's Bowling Association at Wedgewood Lanes with a 1,432. 

1948: Thousands of Youngstown district steel workers will work on Memorial Day as Youngstown's big mills work to meet acute steel shortages. 

Michael J. Carney, the oldest man in Youngstown's Police Department, retires at 71. He joined the department in 1906 and made a detective in 1928.
