City of Youngstown preparing to use state and federal funds to demolish homes

A high number of run down homes in Youngstown is why the city is preparing to flatten them. Using a combination of ARP funds and a state grant worth $5.6 million, city leaders are ready to remove the blight and transform neighborhoods.
Blight remediation superintendent, Michael Durkin says tearing down each house averages between $7,000 to $10,000. He says around 500 abandoned homes are scheduled to be demolished throughout the city, getting the areas ready for economic development.
As part of the city's revitalization plans, Youngstown will use clover grass to create green spaces, this type of grass minimizes the need for maintenance.
Durkin says he hopes to see increased development and growth following the demolition of vacant homes.
Durkin expects the project to be completed by June 2025.
