Austintown man sentenced for head-on crash injuring Liberty principal
An Austintown man has been sentenced to six months in jail for his role in a traffic accident that injured two children and two adults, including Liberty School Principal Jessica Kohler.
Judge John Durkin handed the sentence down to 28-year-old Dylan Walters who pleaded guilty earlier to aggravated vehicular assault for a 2021 head-on crash along Route 46 in Austintown.
In March of that year, troopers said Walters was driving a Chevy Equinox that went left of center, striking a GMC Acadia being driven by 42-year-old Kohler of Canfield.
Both vehicles landed in a ditch, sending both drivers to Mercy Hospital in Youngstown where Kohler was initially listed in critical condition.
Two of Walters’ passengers, both children, ages 7 and 5, were taken to Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron.
Family and co-workers undertook an effort to support Kohler, who is the PK-6th Grade Principal within the Liberty School District.
Kohler and her husband have filed a civil negligence lawsuit against Walters and his mother, Denise Walters who according to the crash report owned the Chevy Equinox her son had been driving.
That case has been turned over to a mediator.
In addition to the jail sentence, Walters's driver's license has been suspended for two years.
