The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has awarded $1 million in grant monry to the city of Struthers for a road redevelopment project on Bridge Street.

Matt Burning, press secretary for ODOT, tells 21 News the grant will go toward improving safety conditions for pedestrians walking along the road.

The grant will be used to offset the costs of the project, which is estimated to cost around $1.6 million, according to the city's Safety Director Bob Benson.

"Our downtown is not very pedestrian friendly," Benson said. "This [project] will make it more accessible."

According to the city's grant application, the city plans to narrow the street to slow down motorists driving on the road, while also increasing access to bicyclists. This includes installing bike lanes with buffers in areas formerly considered possible on-street parking and extending them beyond the downtown limits.

To offset this increase in biking access, the city also plans to install a new parking lot for motorists.

Also included in the project are plans for crosswalk markings on all crosswalks to improve visibility for motorists, pedestrian signals and accessible push buttons at signalized intersections. Curb ramps will also be installed to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act codes.

The city also plans to install new sidewalks and a traffic island at State Street and Bridge Street to control turning movements and make it easier for pedestrians to cross the street.

The city is expected to receive the money between 2025 and 2026.
