WARREN, Ohio - 23 groups of golfers teed off this afternoon in support of Inspiring Minds, a local nonprofit that helps the community's youth.

The event was held at Avalon Golf and Country Club in Warren.

Inspiring minds was founded by Warren Native and former NFL player Deryck Toles and aims to empower youth through education and personal growth.

“We want them to make sure they open their eyes to new experiences so we take them on trips, different industry visits and get exposure to new walks of life,” Carl Diggs, Inspiring Minds Programming Director and former NFL player said.

In 2005, Toles suffered a career ending injury. While reflecting on his career, he decided he wanted to start something to mentor youth in the area the same way he was as a child.

Toles began meeting with a small group of students once a month at McDonald’s in Warren, to talk about their future. Now, the nonprofit helps approximately 4,500 students.

Many former NFL players returned for what they say is a great cause.

The group hopes to raise 100 thousand dollars to keep their programs free.
