WRTA's Federal Station transit hub will be getting a renovation as part of a $2,940,480 federal grant for Valley transportation.

"We're envisioning something that's a little more grand," Dean Harris, WRTA executive director said.

Federal Station will be more of a "mixed use" facility to make it more comfortable for passengers.

The renovation will allow for passengers to stay out of the elements when waiting for busses. The building will be covered and busses will pull under the cover for loading and unloading. It will also have a parking garage, electric vehicle charging stations and other amenities.

The top floor will feature some type of residential area like apartments, affordable housing, condos or rental units. WRTA is looking for a government or private entity to partner with on this venture.

Harris said because people are the ones to ride the busses, it's better to have the two together.

WRTA will take the designs and mock-ups and ask for more federal funding to keep this project going when the time comes.

"The city's been working on the SMART2 grant with fixing up the roads, and trying to make downtown new and updated," Harris said, "We feel that this side of town really needs a Cornerstone and we think our building would really help that end of town."

If all goes as planned, the renovated station will be up and running by 2029.
