Youngstown teachers union calls for board of education regime change
The Youngstown Education Association is calling for a regime change in the Youngstown City School District.
According to the association, the best way in fixing the district is to have a clean slate of administration and leadership due to a lack of trust or transparency.
"The previous regime was obviously not getting the job done managing the YSCD," the association said in a statement. "Our confidence in them was, and still is, at an all-time low. This includes the destruction of the YSCD under the Mohip regime."
The announcement comes after an executive session was held during a board meeting on June 27 to discuss a permanent replacement for Justin Jennings as superintendent of the Youngstown City School District.
The new superintendent was selected, however, they have not been announced yet.
"We have an urgent need for a superintendent that is decisive, transparent, and on the job daily, making good decisions to take us into the new school year and beyond," YEA Spokesperson Jim Courim, an eighth-grade English Language Arts teacher at Chaney Middle School said. "At the juncture of hiring a superintendent, we don't see any transparency."
Courim said the board, which was voted into office, should represent the voters that put them there. He claims the board hasn't shown any loyalty or truthfulness in the process.
"We are asking the board to do what is right and to post the position of the superintendent and consider input from all stakeholders," Courim said.
Regardless of who the board chooses as the next superintendent, Courim said he believes they will have a full plate to deal with, including the YEA contract, which ends June 30.
No negotiations have been scheduled yet for new contracts, according to Courim.
Earlier this year, a series of 21 News Watchdog reports spotlighted the mishandling of budget finances from the district's former Superintendent Justin Jennings.
