Newton Falls City Manager Pamela Priddy and Heritage Accord have both confirmed with 21 News that the Historic Community Center in Newton Falls was not broken into, but instead legally accessed by city officials.

Initial reports to 21 News from multiple sources stated the center had allegedly been broken into and damage done to the interior. However, Heritage Accord said in a statement on Sunday that the building was legally accessed.

The Trumbull County Sheriff's Office is investigating and because the center is on the National Register of Historic Places, it benefits from federal protections, so some federal agencies may also get involved with the investigation.

According to a previous statement to 21 News from Heritage Accord, there was extensive damage to the property. No windows were broken, and nothing so far has been reported stolen from the site.

21 News also spoke briefly with Mayor of Newton Falls Kenneth Kline, who said he also received a call about the center and was on his way to assess the situation.

Kline was the lone vote against a recent resolution to end Heritage Accord's lease and return the Community Center to village control.

21 News is working to obtain more details and will update this article as they become available.
