Canfield's $33M school building proposal missing in signed state budget

Money that would assist Canfield in building a new middle school was not included in the state's final budget signed by Gov. Mike DeWine.
The $33 million would have gone toward Canfield schools' new middle school and for the Accelerated School Assistance Program which supports the learning environment and academic success of students and prepare them for the workforce.
The funding was first included in the house operating budget, which was approved in April.
State Rep. Al Cutrona offered the funding for the school as an amendment to the bill. He also noted that the proposal was completed without impacting property taxes.
Despite this exclusion, Superintendent Joe Knoll tells 21 News this will not impact the district's plan for building the middle school.
"We're saddened this didn't get into the budget bill and appreciate Representative Cutrona's efforts," Knoll said. "[However] we planned day one not to have this money."
On July 12, the Canfield School Board will vote on two resolutions related to the new middle school, including Ohio Facility Construction Commission plans for the building and putting a bond issue up for voter consideration in November.
