GREEN TOWNSHIP, Mahoning Co., Ohio - A horse had to be put down after a driver hit the animal with their car. 

According to a report from Goshen Township, the accident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday on Middletown Road in Green Township. 

The report states that a 17-year-old from Salem was driving behind a 17-year-old girl riding a horse. The driver hit the back of the horse, sending the teenage girl off the animal and into the air. 

The girl did not sustain serious injuries, but the horse had to be euthanized.

According to the report, the boy was looking down at his phone, and did not realize he was approaching the horse so quickly. 

He was charged with failure to maintain an assured clear distance ahead and texting while driving.
