YOUNGSTOWN - A former YSU police dispatcher will avoid prison time for attempting to use  law enforcement computers to look up an escort.

Dean Demain was indicted on charges of unauthorized use of the law enforcement automated database system and unauthorized use of a computer, cable or telecommunications property.

Prosecutors agreed to reduce both of those charges to add the word "attempted," making them misdemeanors.

Judge Maureen Sweeney sentenced Demain to one year probation on the new charges.

Assistant Mahoning County prosecutor Mike Yacavone had previously told 21 News the investigation began in 2018, which is when he said Demain, while working as a YSU dispatcher, used the state's crime computer database to find out more information about a prostitute.

Demain was fired from the university for the offense, but Yacavone said it took five years to bring criminal charges because making Demain's activity public would compromise a human trafficking investigation in another county.
