YOUNGSTOWN - Youngstown City Leaders are cracking down on speeding and crime by adding more high-tech surveillance tools. Within the next few months 32 license plate readers will be installed throughout the city.

Sixth Ward Councilwoman Anita Davis, says half of the readers will be in school zones while the remaining will be distributed throughout the city.

"[We will be] able to look back at that data and see what cars were in that vicinity," Davis said.

Youngstown police officers are undergoing drone training. The aerial surveillance will assist law enforcement with routine patrolling and search and rescue missions. Some drones will be equipped with thermal cameras, allowing police to locate individuals even in challenging conditions, like night time or in wooded areas.

"We expect to have a total of 24 officers including the community police officers all trained on these drones," Davis told 21 News.

Davis says since the speed cameras were installed, speeding tickets in school zones generated $270,000. She emphasizes the goal is not to generate revenue, but rather to improve safety and encourage people to slow down.
