AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - EDITORS NOTE: This story has been modified from its original version to correctly reflect Durkin's gender. We've also since learned that Durkin had entered a guilty plea on her charges.
An Austintown woman is charged with Felonious Assault after pulling a knife on staff members at the Mercy Health Austintown Medical Center.
Police say the incident occurred on Monday, July 24 when 22-year-old Ashley Durkin pulled a knife on a nurse at the hospital. Police observed minor lacerations on the nurse to his inner left forearm.
The nurse told police that Durkin showed up to the hospital voluntarily, but was later held on an emergency admissions form due to statements she had made and actions prior to her visit to the hospital.
The police report does not specify what these actions or statements were.
Police say when staff asked Durkin to put on a gown, she became aggressive and pulled out a pocket knife, pointed it at her own throat and threatened to harm herself.
According to police, when the nurse attempted to confiscate the knife, Durkin swung it and struck the nurse's left forearm. Police say security camera video matches up to the nurse's description of what happened.
Durkin was booked in the Mahoning County Jail on Saturday, July 29 and was released the following day. She was arraigned Monday, July 31 at 1:30 p.m. in the Austintown Municipal Court.
Court records show that Durkin has since pled guilty to a charge of assault in August and was ordered to pay a $100 fine and $70 in court costs.
She was also sentenced to 180 days in jail with 178 of those days suspended, followed by 24 months of non-reporting probation. Durkin was ordered to have no contact with the victim, and undergo mental health treatment.
