Paul Reubens, better known as the iconic character, Pee Wee Herman has died at the age of 70.

According to a statement on the Pee Wee Herman Facebook page, Reubens died Sunday night after a six-year-long battle with cancer. In the statement, Reubens apologized to fans for not going public about this battle.

"Please accept my apology for not going public with what I've been facing for the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you," Reubens said.

Reubens is best known for his roll as Pee Wee Herman on shows such as "The Pee Wee Herman Show" and "Pee Wee's Playhouse," as well as feature-length films such as "Pee Wee's Big Adventure." 

According to the Facebook post, Reubens had asked for any expressions of sympathy to be made in honor of his late parents to Stand Up to Cancer or organizations involved in Dementia and Alzheimer's care, support and research.
