FARMDALE, Ohio - More than 90 animals were rescued from a Farmdale home on Saturday that humane agents describe as "deplorable."

23 dogs and dozens of turkeys, ducks, hens and roosters were found to be living in filthy conditions with limited access to food and water at a home on Dennison Ashtabula Road.

"The home had limited utilities running to it, the amount of debris and urine and feces inside the home was excessive and of course it was very hot in there and a very strong odor from the amount of debris and feces and high heat and humidity," said Lori Shandor, CEO of Animal Welfare League. "Outside the home was not much better, there were dead animals in various states of decay around the property, so it was very bad, it was, we were glad we got to those animals when we did because there were some, had we got there even two or three days later, would not have survived."

Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County made the rescue Saturday - but not all survived.

"There were some that had to be euthanized when they were brought in yesterday, large open wounds, significant disease, things along those lines that it was just too far for us to bring them back safely," Shandor said.

Lori Shandor says it's one of the worst cases their organization has seen this year and some of the dogs, which are Jack Russell terriers or Jack Russell terrier mixes, aren't out of the woods just yet.

"With the limited access to food and the amount of debris in the home, it would be very likely that these dogs were eating garbage and other things to keep their stomachs full so we need to make sure we watch for blockages and things over the next couple weeks," Shandor said.

AWL relies 100% on donations and Shandor says they desperately need help since this case will cost thousands, if not more than $10,000.

"The financial donations will help greatly with medical costs and expenses going forward as well as to help cover the overtime. We had multiple staff that came in on their days off and stayed hours and hours past their shift which led to a lot of overtime costs for the organization but that is what we have to do, removing these animals from that situation, their ailments and conditions had to be addressed immediately to ensure that we were making them as comfortable and allowing them to adjust as quickly as possible," Shandor said. "I know it doesn't relate to this case but we are almost completely out of kitten chow so between that and food for dogs, dogs and puppies, we desperately need help with those as well."

Shandor wants to thank the community for support so far.

"We have raised a little over $1,500 since Saturday, thank you to the community for stepping up as much as they have so far and we will take all the additional help people can give."
