The Mahoning County Coroner has released the identity of a man killed in an alleged homicide on Youngstown's north side Wednesday morning.

According to the Mahoning County Coroner's Office, the male victim was identified as 28-year-old James Merchant.

Multiple police cruisers along with an ambulance were on scene at a home on the 900 Block of Alameda Avenue around the 9:00 a.m. hour investigating the shooting death of a male victim.

According to a press release from YPD, police were dispatched to the home in reference to gunshots. Upon arrival, police found the Merchant's body in the driver's seat of an SUV He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lieutenant Mohammed Awad tells 21 News this was originally being investigated as a suicide. However, once the coroner arrived on scene and examined Merchant's body, the wounds did not appear to be self-inflicted and the incident is now being investigated as a homicide.

Awad tells us police do not have any suspects in mind at this time.
