Warren man's conviction upheld

The 11th District Court of Appeals has upheld a Warren man's conviction for firing shots at police during a chase in 2020.
Mehki Walker, 23, was convicted of two counts of attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.
He was also found guilty of firing a firearm at a peace officer, which earned him seven years in prison.
Walker has been sentenced to 36 to 40 years in prison altogether.
In 2020, police attempted to pull over Walker's vehicle after a stop sign violation on the northwest side of Warren. During the chase that followed, Walker fired shots at both Warren police and a Trumbull County Sherriff.
Walker's attorney appealed the sentence, stating several issues with the trial. This includes a potentially tainted juror, who allegedly knew the juror's family. Another juror is believed to have lived near the shooting.
The defendant also claimed he was misrepresented during the initial trial and evidence presented by the prosecution was flawed.
Despite this appeal, the court found the case was not hampered by impartial jurors. The court also ruled that the evidence against the defendant was sound he was represented by effective counsel.
Walker is currently incarcerated at the Mansfield Correctional Institution.
