SOBE Concerned Citizens will hold a rally Wednesday afternoon to stop the proposed SOBE Energy Plant from expanding services beyond steam heat in Youngstown.

That rally will be held at 21 West Boardman Street outside the Mahoning County Courthouse complex where County Commissioners and now currently Youngstown City Council meets in Suite 220.

The rally will be at 3:30 p.m. before a 4 p.m. city finance committee and prior to a 5:30 p.m. special  Youngstown council meeting to urge city officials to publicly state their opposition to SOBE.

The group is concerned about the health risks the plant could pose for the area if it's permitted to operate in the city.

The facility would be located at the old Youngstown Thermal building on North Avenue and would be used to produce synthetic gas from chopped up tires and plastics to sell.  Many living nearby say they aren't getting all of the answers from the company they need on if it's safe.

In July, The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency announced it is seeking the public's opinion on the installation of a SOBE thermal energy plant in Youngstown.

Comments are due at the end of the business day September 10th. The groups fighting against this are asking for that timeline to be extended.
