The Mahoning County Coroner has indentified the victim of a Thursday night homicide on Youngstown's South side as 38 year old Austin Mendenhall.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. on Ferndale Avenue near Hillman Street.

According to the police report, officers responded to the scene at approximately 7:18pm after ShotSpotter reported gunfire in the area. At the same time, YPD's 911 Center received calls for gunfire and reports that a man was shot. 

Upon arrival, officers found Mendenhall in the front yard, who would later be pronounced dead by EMTs at the scene. 

Just minutes after arriving, the report says, "hundreds of people descended on the block" while officers and Neighborhood Response Units attempted to cordon off the homicide scene. 

The report says that dozens of people were outside when the homicide occurred, and asks that anyone with information contact YPD at (330) 746-CLUE or (330) 746-8YPD. Any tips that lead to arrest and/or prosecution are eligible for monetary rewards.

Detectives, Crime Scene Investigators, and the Mahoning County Coroner are still investigating.
