COLUMBUS, Ohio - A new initiative will allow volunteer firefighters across Ohio access to training free of charge.

According to a press release from the Ohio Department of Commerce, one of the key budget items and initiatives to come from the Governor DeWine's Volunteer Fire Service Task Force is the waiver off all State Fire Marshal Ohio Fire Academy fees for all volunteer firefighters.

Fire Marshal, Kevin Reardon says he's proud to witness Ohio's commitment to its volunteer firefighters.

"The decision to waive all State Fire Academy fees shows this dedication to providing support for those who safeguard our communities," Reardon said in a news release.

Last year, Ohio Governor, Mike DeWine convened the task force to examine Ohio's volunteer fire service. The initiative consisted of elected officials and firefighters representing several regions of the state.

The task force's findings noted the need for affordable training for Ohio's volunteer fire service.

Prospective firefighters interested in this free training are encouraged to contact their local fire department. In addition, many volunteer department opportunities are listed online where aspiring firefighters can check opportunities in their local communities.
