JFK Catholic student initiative receives $1,000 for garden improvements

The Student Betterment Committee at John F. Kennedy Catholic School in Warren has been awarded a $1,000 grant by the Karma for Cara Foundation, according to a release.
The Student Betterment Committee, which was formed by students to create new initiatives and improve student relationships, used the funds to improve a garden at the school.
The garden was built by the SBC, who also maintain it by planting, weeding, landscaping, watering, and harvesting when the time comes.
Produce from the garden is used in school lunches at JFK Catholic and donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Shelter to make fresh meals for underserved community members.

The Karma for Cara Grant Foundation, which provided the funds, was created to support initiatives by young people nationwide to contribute to their communities and better society through volunteer work and community service.
In a statement announcing the grant, the Karma for Cara Grant Foundation said in part, "You are joining an amazing and inspiring group of hundreds of young leaders who are making a huge difference in our world. Thank you for your dedication to service and for letting us be a part of your project!”
JFK Catholic said the grant funds will be used to implement a second phase of the garden and courtyard project, which will include picnic tables for students to eat lunch and study outdoors as well as a water feature, four new planter beds, and a sprinkler system.
