WASHINGTON, D.C. - Ohio-based U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has introduced bipartisan legislation supporting tax cuts for teachers in order to help cover out-of-pocket classroom expenses.

Senator Brown, along with nine other senators including Pennsylvania-based U.S. Senator, Bob Casey are expected to introduce the Educators Expense Deduction Modernization Act to quadruple the amount teachers can deduct from their taxes to cover out-of-pocket classroom expenses.

As it stands, the current deduction for teachers is $250. According to a press release from Senator Brown's office, that's far less than most teachers spend out of their own pockets every year for classroom supplies.

If passed, the legislation would increase that deduction from $250 to $1,000.

"Ohio educators shouldn't have to dip into their too-small paychecks simply to do their jobs. We need to allow teachers to deduct more of those costs from their taxes, so they can ensure Ohio students get the education they deserve," Senator Brown said.

According to the Department of Education, 94% of public school teachers paid for classroom supplies without any reimbursement, with teachers spending an average of $800 out of pocket for classroom supplies each year with nearly one in 10 teachers spending more than $1,000 each year.

The legislation is supported by the National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers, The National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Ohio Education Association.
