1998: Critics say what began as a sweeping investigation of government corruption in Mahoning County led to three special prosecutors spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to obtain indictments that could have been handled, for the most part, by the county prosecutor's office.

More than 700 school-age children in the Mahoning Valley have joined a growing trend toward homeschooling.

Penn State ranks 9th in the nation, romps over Bowling Green State University, 48-3, giving Coach Joe Paterno his 330th career victory. 

1983: The old laboratory of the U.S. Steel Corp. Ohio Works on Salt Springs Road is being razed after it was gutted by a two-alarm arson fire. 

A main cross-country natural gas line on Rt. 468 in Wilmington Township, Pa., ruptured, forcing the evacuation of residents within a half-mile radius. 

A combination restaurant/nightclub, Bombay Bicycle Club, will open on the site of the former Smugglers Inn at 1231 Youngstown-Warren Road in Niles.

1973: The 23-year-old Louisiana coed who left her newborn baby girl in the toilet of an airliner at Youngstown Municipal Airport is sentenced to two years in federal prison.

The Campbell Education Association ratifies an agreement that freezes salaries for the year but provides for the return of five of six teachers whose contracts had not been renewed.

Mercer County Judge Albert E. Acker orders a full investigation of methods and devices used by the Shenango Valley Narcotics Unit after a former agent claims illegal surveillance methods were used. 

1948: The Rev. Howard D. Talbott, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, announces his resignation after 10 years at the church. The announcement came as a surprise to the congregation. 

Development of new iron ore sources in Quebec may prove an incentive to pursue the construction of the Lake Erie-Ohio River canal. 

Blair E. Robinson, 21, of Youngstown, was killed when his motorcycle careened off a car pulling out of a driveway at 2825 W. Federal Street and struck a utility pole.
