Mercer County, Pa. - The Mercer County District Attorney is reminding people to be cautious while driving on roads frequented by Amish buggies after a fatal crash Tuesday.

Mercer County District Attorney Pete Acker is telling drivers to exercise caution while driving on roads that are known to be frequently traveled by Amish buggies, such as Mercer-New Wilmington Road and Mercer-New Castle Road.

Those roads are posted with warning signs for drivers about Amish buggies and Amish farms and residences can be seen while traveling along the roads.

Acker also wants to remind drivers that any significant impact between a vehicle and an Amish buggy has a high probability of death or serious injury to the occupant of the buggy.

According to Acker, the Vehicle Code specifically states that a motorist cannot drive faster than a speed which permits motorists to stop their vehicle within the assured clear distance ahead.

Acker also wants to remind people that the Amish are an intimate community and after severe incidents, several members gather at the accident scene.

On Tuesday morning around 8 a.m., Pennsylvania State Police Mercer responded to the 1100 block of New Wilmington Road for a crash involving a buggy. 73-year-old Mary Byler was pronounced dead at the scene by Mercer County Coroner John Libonati.

Byler's husband was also traveling in the buggy, and was taken from the scene and treated for injuries.

According to Acker, this was the second fatal buggy crash of 2023.

While at the scene, Pennsylvania State Police were alerted to a separate crash involving an Amish buggy north of Mercer that reportedly did not have any injuries.

The crash is still under investigation by Pennsylvania State Police, and no charges have been filed yet.
