Lisbon wins this year's 'Clash of Cans' competition, over 2,200 cans collected
A friendly competition between the two schools led to thousands of canned goods collected for several Columbiana County programs.
Lisbon and United battle it out each year to see which school can collect more canned goods. The tradition started 6 years ago and continues to grow every year.
Lisbon's collection goes towards the village's Community Action Agency and United's goes to the school's backpack and Community Outreach programs.
Lisbon came out on top this year, earning the traveling trophy and bragging rights. Both principals told 21 News the event always brings the communities together.
"It brings awareness for the kids to help and give back to the community and give them some incentive at the same time," said Keith Edenfield, Principal at David Anderson Jr/Sr High School.
"It's a great way to use a friendly rivalry to support our communities through a good cause," said Bill Young, Principal at United High School.
Lisbon received a boost this year from the Lisbon Police Department after they hosted a 'Stuff the Cruiser' event on September 13.
The school was awarded the 'Clash of the Cans' traveling trophy at its homecoming game on Friday.
In total, over 2,200 cans were collected. Edenfield told 21 News, coincidentally, the home team has always won every year.
