Mahoning Valley - The American Red Cross is still experiencing a national blood and platelet shortage across the country and is encouraging folks in the Mahoning Valley and beyond to donate as soon as possible.

According to a press release from the American Red Cross of Northern Ohio, donors of all blood types are needed, especially type O blood donors and those giving platelets.

"When blood and platelet supplies drop to critical levels, it makes hospitals and the patients they are treating vulnerable – especially if there is a major accident or emergency medical procedure that requires large quantities of blood during a disaster," said Red Cross Medical Director, Dr. Baia Lasky.
