1998: Youngstown Mayor George McKelvey calls for a ceasefire in the war over water rate hikes between the city and the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District. The Cleveland Indians tie the race for the American League Division championship at 1-1 after a 9-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Jacobs Field. 

The city-owned Wick Building on Federal Plaza needs more than $200,000 in repairs, even as the city learns that some tenants owe thousands of dollars in unpaid rent. 

1983: Donald Handy, 47, and his 20-year-old daughter, Daphne, die in a fire that swept through their two-story frame home on Maryland Street in Sebring. Three others escaped uninjured.

A plaque bearing the likeness of the late Rev. Arthur B. DeCrane will be installed at the St. Joseph Newman Center on Youngstown State University's campus. Father DeCrane was a longtime chaplain at YSU and the Youngstown Fire Department. 

The city of Sharon is awarded a $385,000 federal grant to help convert the vacant Strouss store downtown into an outlet mall. 

  1973: Quick action by 13-year-old Lee Trotter is credited with saving the life of a companion who became exhausted while swimming in the small lake at the Trumbull Country Club. Trotter led his brother and three companions in pulling Mark Irwin, 14, from the lake 

The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Stephen Begalla, 77, a priest in the Youngstown Diocese for 50 years, dies at his retirement home in Florida. 

A club-wielding young North Side man is shot and wounded in the leg by police who chased him into a driveway behind St. Columba Cathedral after they were called to investigate someone tampering with a parked truck. 

1948: A few downtown Youngstown barber shops and many in neighborhoods have cut the price of a haircut from $1.25 to $1, stirring dissension in the barbers union. 

Edward Humphrey, a CIO leader, files suit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, claiming that Youngstown's income tax ordinance is unconstitutional. He seeks an injunction barring its collection.
