WASHINGTON, D.C. - Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is now the former Speaker of the House of Representatives after a vote took place on October 3rd to remove him from the position.

The final tally was 216 yes votes to 210 no votes, largely falling along party lines.

All 208 Democrats voted yes while eight Republicans joined them. They were Andy Biggs (AZ), Ken Buck (CO), Tim Burchett (TN), Elijah Crane (AZ), Matt Gaetz (FL), Bob Good (VA), Nancy Mace (SC), and Matthew Rosendale (MT).

Rep. Gaetz was the one to file a motion to vacate the position.

Mahoning and Shenango Valley congressmen Bill Johnson, Dave Joyce and Mike Kelly - all Republicans - voted against McCarthy's removal.

This is the first time in U.S. history that a Speaker of the House has been voted out of office. McCarthy held the position for less than a year, assuming office on January 7, 2023, after a four-day election.

Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) was named speaker pro tempore.

Bill Johnson released the following statement on the vote:

"With this vote, a small group of political vandals joined with partisan Democrats to remove the Republican Speaker and cause chaos at a time when America craves normalcy and mature leadership. This House may be divided against itself for now, but this will not stand. I will not turn away from the hard work and good governance this nation needs."

Mike Kelly also posted on X before the vote, voicing his support for McCarthy:
