Mercer corn maze offering sensory-friendly option for all to enjoy this Thursday

The pumpkins are out and the cider is hot over at Coolspring Corn Maze in Mercer County - and this year plan to include everyone in the fun - including those with sensory needs.
The maze is hosting a day reserved only for those on the autism spectrum or with sensory needs in a safe environment for frolic and fun, this Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Fall activities like trick or treating or a day at the corn maze can be loads of fun - but if you have a family member with sensory needs, it may be a challenge getting them acclimated to the world around them.
In Mercer County, things will look different than they do now at Coolspring Corn Maze, with a sensory-friendly event for people of all ages with special needs.
"It is an atmosphere that all families can come to that will allow them to be amongst other families so there’s no judgment," said Sara McCullough of Coolspring Corn Maze.
It'll be a quieter night with lower numbers - a safe place to explore without pressure.
If at any point during this event, those with sensory needs feel they need to take a step back or feel overwhelmed, they can step out to a nearby tent which is an area set aside to allow those attending to a calm-down area where they can just come and relax.
In addition - experts say preparation is key.
Mary Brown, co-owner and behavior analyst of Progressive ABA Therapy Group in Boardman said, "Letting the child know what to expect at an event or if they’re going trick-or-treating. You can have your child bring some of their favorite things with them if they have some sensory items like squishy balls or things like that that they enjoy."
Also using headphones if needed, staying away from brightly decorated houses and taking breaks in between will help all to enjoy this fall delight.
