More explosive training expected at Camp James A. Garfield in Newton Falls

Newton Falls residents and business owners may have heard an increase of blast noises coming from Camp James A. Garfield today.
That's because explosives will be used during training conducted by the Ohio Army National Guard’s 812th Engineer Company Friday through Sunday, Oct. 22, according to the Ohio Adjutant's Department.
These blasts will sound louder than during normal operations and intermittent gun fire will also be heard.
The idea of the annual training, which goes through the fall, is to simulate realistic battle conditions.
The Ohio Adjutant's Department says the 812th Engineer Company, located in Lorain, Ohio, is a sapper unit, which performs a wide variety of combat engineering duties including bridge-building, laying or clearing minefields, demolitions, field defenses, general construction and building, as well as road and airfield construction and repair.
