The Ohio EPA has determined that 138,100 gallons of treated wastewater from the toxic Norfolk Southern train derailment in February 3 in East Palestine can be classified as non-hazardous.

The request was submitted by Norfolk Southern Railway Company for water that had been listed as hazardous waste due to vinyl chloride that
was released as a result of the train derailment. The water was gathered from milepost PC49 railroad tracks northeast of North Pleasant Drive and Taggart Road intersection in Columbiana County.

According to the Ohio EPA, the waster water was found to have levels below the U.S. EPA maximum contaminant level for drinking water and Norfolk Southern provided documentation that the wastewater does not exhibit a characteristic of hazardous waste.

With the new classification, Norfolk Southern will be sending the newly reclassified water to Buckeye Brine in Coshocton, receiving 94,100 gallons of the wastewater, and 44,000 gallons to Vickery Environmental in Vickery, both in Ohio, as the disposal facilities for the wastewater.
